Who will carry me when I am so weary and/or discouraged that I feel like I can’t go on? There is Someone who comes as an inner flow — the Holy Spirit.
“‘Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.’ By this He (Jesus) meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive.” (John 7:38-39)
There is an incredible inner flow of the Holy Spirit and power available to those who follow and obey Jesus. This is not just a Bible story, but a living, 21st Century reality.
I depend daily on the Holy Spirit’s flowing out of me. I think I would self-destruct without Him.
When you read the Book of Acts in the New Testament portion of the Bible, you see that the early Christ followers experienced a word flow of the Holy Spirit — the out-flowing in prayer of words that they didn’t know. (See Acts 2:4, 9:44-46, and 19:6 where this is called “speaking in tongues“)
Apostle Paul teaches about this in 1 Corinthians chapter 14. He says that the purpose of speaking in tongues is to strengthen (“edify”) individual believers and that it is normally intended to be used privately (or quietly) and only for public attention if it is going to be translated into the common language so that everybody can understand it.
Paul writes: “If I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding.” He also says (speaking of His personal, not public, use of tongues): “I thank my God I speak in tongues more than all of you.” (1 Corinthians 14:14-19)
Perhaps speaking in tongues was a key to Paul’s power as a follower of Christ. I know that speaking in tongues keeps passionate love for Christ in my heart.
So how does it work? Speaking in tongues is a spiritual gift. And it works like a water faucet in your house. The water in your house is ready to flow 24/7; yet it won’t flow until you turn the faucet on. So with speaking in tongues.
Acts chapter 2 states: “All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” In order to experience that in the 21st Century, we must sincerely desire to align our heart and lifestyle to God’s will and then ask Him to fill us with His Spirit.
At that point the Holy Spirit is ready to flow (the water pressure in the faucet is ready). The only thing we need to do is to step out in faith and begin to speak words beyond our knowledge (turn the faucet). At that moment a miracle happens — a supernatural stream of unknown words begins to flow from deep within and through our speech organs releasing an unbelievable sense of God’s presence, power, love, and joy!
This actually happened to me and I have seen it happen to many, many people. After the first experience, you can pray in tongues any time and release the glorious inner flow of God’s power and presence.
So when you feel like you can’t go on, remember, God has a supernatural flow for you, too. If you would like someone to talk with you and/or pray with you about this, you can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
