However, Pentecost wasn’t programmed by a man and it didn’t stick to a printed order of worship. Pentecost was Spirit-led and it started a chain reaction that spread Christianity all over the world. (Since that first Pentecost was so powerful, perhaps we need more Spirit-led, unprogrammed church meetings!)

Pentecost is about God using everyday people (like fishermen and tax collectors) in prophecy, visions, & dreams as prompted by the Spirit. Peter describes what happened at Pentecost by quoting the Old Testament.

This is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.’”

To prophesy is to speak words directly from God. (God says:  “Open your mouth and I will fill it.”)

Visions are pictures that God puts into your mind. (Notice the images that come to your mind and recognize which ones are from God.)

Dreams are godly goals that passionately burn in your heart. (Martin Luther King had a passionate, God-inspired dream. Do you?)

About Steve Simms

I like to look and think outside the box. I have written two books: Mindrobics: How To Be Happy For The Rest Of Your Life and Your Sperm Won--Experiencing Your Value As A Championship Human Being. In college I encountered Jesus Christ and I have been passionate about trying to get to know Him better ever since. My wife and I lead a non-traditional church in Nashville based on open participation and Spirit-led sharing. We long to see the power and passion of the early church come to life in our time.
