Here’s A Curious Question: Isn’t “Same-Sex Marriage” An Oxymoron?

President Obama’s comment about same-sex marriage made me think.

An oxymoron can be defined as a figure of speech which combines incongruous or contradictory terms.

Since marriage has been defined for millennia as a relationship between a man and a woman (and as far as I can tell, never in history until the late 20th Century been thought of by any culture on earth as between two people of the same sex); doesn’t that put the phrase same-sex marriage in the same category as these oxymoronsdeafening silenceicy hot, pretty ugly, cruel kindness, a definite maybe, original copy, silent scream, sweet sorrow,  a mournful optimist?

About Steve Simms

I like to look and think outside the box. In college I encountered Jesus Christ and I have been passionate about trying to get to know Him better ever since. My wife and I co-lead a non-traditional expression of the body of Christ in Nashville based on open participation and Spirit-led sharing. We long to see the power and passion of the first Christ-followers come to life in our time. I have written a book about our experiences called, "Beyond Church: An Invitation To Experience The Lost Word Of The Bible--Ekklesia" that is available in Kindle & paperback @ http://amzn.to/2nCr5dP

Steve, you’re beginning with a false premise…that marriage has always been between a man and a woman.
From Wikipedia and the history of marriage.
“Various marriage practices have existed throughout the world. In some societies an individual is limited to being in one such couple at a time (monogamy), while other cultures allow a male to have more than one wife (polygyny) or, less commonly, a female to have more than one husband (polyandry). Some societies also allow marriage between two males or two females. Societies frequently have other restrictions on marriage based on the ages of the participants, pre-existing kinship, and membership in religious or other social groups.”
So, no, same-sex marriage is not an oxymoron.

Thanks for the comment, Jim. I think Wikipedia is incorrect. Can you give me an example of a society that has practiced same-sex marriage prior to the late 20th Century? I’ve never been able to find one. The other 3 types of marriage Wikipedia mentions are not same-sex.

Same sex marriage is an attack on logic, language and life.
