In the West the church is not changing contemporary culture. Instead, church members are being swayed and swept along by society’s hedonism and the church appears to be powerless to prevent it. We are a post Christian society.
Perhaps we need a fresh, innovative way of doing church — a biblical way that releases God’s life-transforming spiritual power. A life-giving way of having church is described in 1 Corinthians 14:26, yet almost no church in the West follows that Scripture. (However, China has tens of thousands of such churches — sometimes called house church or organic church.)
So what do we have to lose in America and the West? Why not give it a go? Can this biblical way of doing church be any less effective that what Western churches are doing? If you live in Nashville, come to The Salvation Army Berry Street and experience participatory church for yourself on Sunday mornings at 10:45 at 225 Berry St., 37207.
The change we could see in the evangelical church with at least trying 1 Cor 14:26 could lead to another reformation. And I don’t doubt that’s where it would go. The issue that saddens me– is that with a lack of desire for anything more, there’s no spiritual desire for the greater things of God and no motivation to push one’s self to acquire more of the Holy Spirit. When you think about it, Religion really is a counterfeit of the Spirit, not only does it make you feel you’ve arrived but it quenches the appetite to draw near to God and confronts the allowance for God to draw near to us like it says in James. Lord may your church awaken to see the truth and have a great hunger and desire for you O God!
Amen, David!
