Trash talking takes away truth and trumps trust

People trash talking other people isn’t helping our situation. Let’s try some kindness instead!

To trash talk people is to disobey Christ and be tactless. Trash talking tarnishes truth, trumps trust, tramples on tenderness. Should we trash talk others; or to speak the truth in love? That is the question.
–When we attack people, put them down, and/or call them names on social media (or in other places) aren’t we disobeying Jesus? Should our words beat people up, or build them up? Shouldn’t Christians obey Jesus and find a way to disagree with people without verbally beating them up?
–Jesus said “Do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.” (Luke 6:27=28)

Should Christ-followers verbally beat people up with bitterness, rage, anger, slander, and malice? Or build them up by being kind, compassionate, and forgiving?
–“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Ephesians 4:29-32

Right wing? Left wing? How about we stop being so cantankerous and center on bringing our life under God’s wings?
–“He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” –Psalm 91:4
–“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.” –Jesus in Matthew 23:37

It’s time to turn from unkindness to kindness . . .
–“The Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful.” –2 Timothy 2:24

“Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.” –1 Peter 3:9

“With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.” –James 3:9-10

Feel like you can’t stop trash talking others? Jesus sees us caught in sin and shame and frees us from our chains so we’ll never be the same.

About Steve Simms

I like to look and think outside the box. In college I encountered Jesus Christ and I have been passionate about trying to get to know Him better ever since. My wife and I co-lead a non-traditional expression of the body of Christ in Nashville based on open participation and Spirit-led sharing. We long to see the power and passion of the first Christ-followers come to life in our time. I have written a book about our experiences called, "Beyond Church: An Invitation To Experience The Lost Word Of The Bible--Ekklesia" that is available in Kindle & paperback @ http://amzn.to/2nCr5dP
