Self-control — the fruit of the Spirit

If you aren’t controlling your desires, thoughts, and feelings, then you’re not in control of your life. They are.

If we would spend more time and effort controlling self and less trying to control other people, life would be much happier. People who won’t restrain their tormenting impulses and thoughts, will be harassed and controlled by them. If we won’t put the brakes on our own thoughts, feelings, and desires, we end up surrendering to torment, guilt, and self-destruction.

Self-control does what is right, even when it doesn’t feel like it. Without self-control, we humans are a like a horseback rider without reins.

Self-control is not easily provoked. However, when the temper is lost, self-control is thrown out the door.

Self-control restrains wrongful and harmful thoughts, desires, and feelings. When self-control is set aside, life becomes chaotic and destructive. We need to resist, expose, and overcome the evil in our own heart, not just ignore it or deny it.

Self-control is obedience to Jesus’ command to, “Deny yourself.” It’s a characteristic of someone who is being led by the Spirit.

You can’t follow Jesus, if you won’t use self-control, restrain yourself, and refuse to follow your own feelings, thoughts, and desires. Anyone who tells you not to control your own impulses, thoughts, and desires, is contradicting Christianity.

About Steve Simms

I like to look and think outside the box. In college I encountered Jesus Christ and I have been passionate about trying to get to know Him better ever since. My wife and I co-lead a non-traditional expression of the body of Christ in Nashville based on open participation and Spirit-led sharing. We long to see the power and passion of the first Christ-followers come to life in our time. I have written a book about our experiences called, "Beyond Church: An Invitation To Experience The Lost Word Of The Bible--Ekklesia" that is available in Kindle & paperback @ http://amzn.to/2nCr5dP
